Waste Minimization/Pollution Prevention
Waste minimization and pollution prevertion are two [erms that are becoming increasingly snore common ir.~. industry
today. Waste minimization includes reducing the amount of waste at the source through changes in industrial processes,
and reuse and rerycling of wastes for the origins! ar some other purpose such as materials recovery or ene.~gy
production. Pollution prevention goes hand-in-hand with waste minimization. IJthe waste is eliminated ar the front of
the line, it will not have to be treated at the end ojrhe line. The direct benefits to the industry are often significant -
both in terms of increased profit and in public relations.
This program can afj'ect all areas of process and waste coNrol with which your industry deals. Elimination or reduction
oja wastewater pollutam can also result in a reduction of an air pollutant or a reduction in the amount of .hazardous
materials that you have to handle and/or dispose.
This discharge permit does not specifically dictate waste minimization conditions at this time. We strongly encourage the
permirtee to develop a waste minimization plan. Severn[ industries have already developed plans and found that
implementation resulted in substantial savings. Both the Colorado Department of Public Health and Enviro, vment an:
EPA have information and resources available to help you explore this topic.
F.
