A minimum of 15 cover and production samples will be taken, Chen
sample adequacy will be calculated using the formula:
r ~ T2 S2
Nmin -
Hhere Nmin - The minimum number of observations needed
T - 1.28 for the 80X of confidence level
S2 - Variance of initial sample
D - .lz [sample mean (~ times level of accuracy
(+ loz))
Sampling viii continue until the required number of sa®ples to meet
adequacy has been taken, up to a maximum of 60 on affected areas and 30 on
reference areas; the confidence level achieved with the maximum number of
samples will be calculated if Nmin is greater than the maximum aumber
taken.
The direction of cover transects will be determined by a randomly
`~~ selected compass bearing. Vegetation cover will be gathered using the
point intercept method and 10 pin frame (Mueller-Dombois and Ellenbert
1974). Each cover transect will consist of a total of 100 points along a
SOm iransect. The pin frame viii be read on both sides of the transsect
line at five randomly selected points along the 50 meter iransect. Cover
hits for vegetation (by species), litre crock, or bare ground will be
recorded at each point. Vegetation cover sampling will be conducted during
late July 19$3. Vegetation cover on the reference area must be equivalent
to .the vegetation cover on the pinyon-juniper affected area before produc-
tivity measurements on the areas can be made.
Productivity measurements will also be taken !n late July, 1983. One
production quadrat will be clipped at each randomly located sample point in
the pinyon-juniper community and reference area. Productivity exclosures
will not be necessary because domestic livestock will not be grazed in the
area. Production samples will be collected by clipping all the current
• year's grouch of herbaceous vegetation vithln a 4m2 rectangular quadrat at
38-33
