1 UNITED S~ES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICU~RE
' SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE
356 Ranney Street, Craig Colorado 81625
5u0JECT: Conservation Planting DATE:
s .
~~ Beaver Brothers
640 East Victory Way
Craig, Colorado 81625
EXHIBIT "D"
Dear Sirss

i
'1
F
•~.
~~
~S
i
e
c'i
-.
r..f
4'
~~
i t
The following recommendations on reclamation of the sand pit on Bi.g Gulch 15
miles west of Craig are made at your request. The following guidelines should
be helpful in assisting you with successful revegetation of the ;and pit.
1. Stock pile enough topsoil,/ to be able to go back and cover 1;he area
with at least 10 to 12 inches of topsoil for reclamation. After r~iining, the
slopes should not be greater than 3s1. Slopes of 6s1 or flatter :sre more desireable.
In general, the chances for vegetation establishment increase as i~ercent slope
decreases. Ten inches or more of topsoil should be applied after shaping
and grading have been completed. The site should be tilled to a depth of
approximately 12 to 14 inches. Tillage will permit the topsoil to bind with
the subsoil material, prevent air pockets, encourage root penetration and
prevent topsoil slippage on slopes. If the topsoil is placed on the area
during the summer and seeding vrill not be done until fall the situ should be
kept free from weeds.
2. Fertilize immediately prior to seeding with 40-60 pounds available N and
40-60 pounds available P205 per acre. 200 pounds of either Pmonium Nitrate or
Amonium Sulfate per acre along with l00 pounds of Super Phosphate per acre
r~ will provide the desired amount of Nand P2o5. Apply the fertili:~er during
"~ seedbed preparation before packing it. The fertilizer should be :incorporated
into the soil to a depth of 2 to 4 inches.
3. A weed free, firm but not compacted seedbed can be prepared before seeding.
A cultipacker or similar equipment can be used to firm up the seedbed. The soil
should be firm enough that when a man walks on it the heel of his shoe will
only sink into the soil an inch or so.
4. Drill the seed mixture 1/2 to 1 inch deep in the prepared seedbed.
Planting should be made with a drill capable of seeding both small seeds and large
seeds in separate compartments. Care should be taken to see that the seed
is planted at the proper depth. Drill across the slope. Seeding in the late
fall around October 1016 is recommended so that germination will occur the
lollowinq sprirq.
i
~~
..-
O l
V~
