02/28/1994 13 25 FROM US EPR - R8 WTR MGT DIU TO 98328106 P.05
• ~~ r •
This plant will also endanger human health and wildlife habitat, pollute
the air, the ground and the water, destroy the peace through noise
pollution and increased truck traffic, reduce the value of surrounding
property, destroy the future agricultural potential of that parcel of
ground, and create an eyesore at the side of Hwy. 550.
This isn't an issue burdening only those of us who live near the proposed
plant. All of Montrose County and Ouray County will be affected. The
natural beauty of this valley has long been promoted to tourists, but what
tourist will want fo stay here wf<en he or she sees, smeTlfi, hears
industrial plants in the middle of the green pastures?
An asphalt plant belongs in an industrial area. Sure there's no pollution
here, they say, so our small amount wont do much harm. Sut many of us
whose health depends on the clean air will indeed be put in danger. We the
residents DO NOT WANT pollution of any sort here -- not particulates, dust,
oil, smoke or noise pollution.
And in a time when population growth is threatening the world food supply,
it is extremely important that we protect farm and ranch lands from
development, especially from industrial development. When the land is
destroyed, there will be no place to grow the grains, vegetables, fruits,
livestock necessary for human survival.
IInfted Companies claim they will restore this parcel of land under the
reclamation laws. But their proposal is to leave a 37-acre pit with 45-
degree walls -- that IS NOT ground that will be good farm land, even if
they put a few feet of topsoil over it. This isn't restoration. It is a
vast scar. We cannot stress this enough.
Nor can we stress enough how much we DO NOT WANT this asphalt company in
our neighborhood. please grant us a healthy solution to this situation.
Please DO NOT allow United Companies to mine in .our neighborhood. Thank
you.
Sincerely,
~~
M.Joyce Martin, Director
., • . .
:-~~
4;;r:
:~ •~.
": mac' ~. i, . ••.:.
