Because the land is zoned "AG-
OPStd," polluting industries, such as United Companies, Can destroy good
agricultural land in whatever pursuit they wish. State agencies are our
only hope for stopping them.
On Feb. 15 representatives from United Companies SpoKe with a large group
of us who live fn the area. They were evasive and misleading when
addressing our concerns, and they attempted to focus on reclamation of the
site ten or more years AFTER they destroy it. Reclamation IS NOT our focus.
we very much would like to see agricultural lands protected from this kind
of assault. we strongly urge you to deny permits to United Companies before
anything further is done to this 37-acre parcel across the highway from our
retreat center.
we came to the Uncompahgre Valley in 1978 specifically because it was (and
is) a beautiful, quiet, unspoiled spot where the sky was still blue. we
Came with a dream, a dream to create a family farm and orchard that
sustains us and the poor, a dream to build a place where people of all
faiths could come to get away from the noise and rush of the cities, a
place where they can find peace, listen to their spirit, and meet their
Creator.. ... _ ~--.._.... _ _. _ _..........._ _ _ -... .. ..... -..
Our family, close friends, and many volunteers have made it a reality.
spas in Deo retreat center is a non-profit, religious center
recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. People from all over the
country come here; they return year after year because they find that
quiet place they so desperately need.
with United Companies bringing in a rock-crashing operation
and an asphalt plant directly across the highway from us,
our dream, our livelihood is threatened. we rely on the
~ural beauty of the area to attract retreatants.
Csod .is mf fov¢, I «m H[b 60P,Qow¢h
