I • 2) Roadwork and development of the shaft site and electric borehole site, and
3) Construction of the new electrical substation.
All of these high priority facilities must be started early in the project in order to provide the power
and ventilation needs critical to continued mine operations. The construction approach and
construction schedule adopted by MCC for this project are reflected in these priorities. MCC
proposes to break ground for these facilities immediately upon permit approval and execution of a
Construction Contract, and proceed vigorously with completion of these tasks.
Priority subtasks and tentative completion dates for these subtasks are as follows:
Substation Road June 15, 1997
Sediment Pond SG-1 June 20, 1997
Water Tank Road to Landing #2 (Begin Transmission Line) July 0 i, 1997
Upper Detention Pond July O1, 1997
Electric Borehole Road and Pad (Begin Drilling) July O1, 2997
Substation Pad and Cut Slope (Begin Substation) July O5, 1997
Shag Site Clearwater Drainage July 09, 1997
Shaft Site Sediment Control Ditch (Begin Clearing) July ]5, 1997
Main Sylvester Gulch Crossing July 31,1997
Main Road at Shaft Site (Begin Major Earthwork) August 15, 1997
Electric Distribution System August 30, 1997
•
Substation Construction August 30, 1997
Electric Transmission Line August 30, 1997
It is important to note that construction activities associated with the Refuse Pile Expansion (RPEj
project also have critical path components related to mine operations and to the SGFA. MCC
views the RPE and SGFA as one construction project, and the proper sequencing of activities at
both areas will be critical to the efficient and economical completion of both projects. Critical
subtasks and completion dates for the RPE are as follows:
North Soil Storage Area May 27, 1997
RPE Pond June 06, 1997
RPE Access Road (Begin Phase lA excavation) June 15, 1997
Begin Phase 1B Excavation (Begin placing gob) June 30, 1997
Other facilities within the SGFA, most notably the widening and realignment the existing Sylvester
Gulch road and the completion of the Water Tank light use access road from Landing #2 to the
water tank, are not critical to the completion of other priority tasks. These tasks can and will be
postponed until later in the project.
In addition to construction efforts, MCC has planned a major geotechnical investigation program
within the SGFA to support Phase II design efforts. This geotechnical program (currently)
consists of approximately 125 boreholes to investigate the soil properties, groundwater occurrence,
and bedrock depth within Sylvester Gulch. Drill crews and geotechnical specialists will be on site
• throughout the SGFA construction process.
