State Reg.
Box Cut Spoil. Prior to placement of any spoil from a box cut,
all available topsoil will be removed from the area onto which
spoil will be placed and graded. The location of existing open
pits are shown on Exhibit 12-1, Operations Plan.
A series of range diagrams were drawn throughout the mining
areas. Representative range diagrams submitted with the permit
are typical of the series, thus not all diagrams were
submitted. As shown on Exhibit 12-12, Range Diagram WC-3, the
box cut spoil will be placed adjacent to the box cut and then
graded. The placement, as shown on this exhibit, is needed to
reconstruct the drainage near its approximate original channel
location and elevation. It is Peabody's position that
reestablishment of the drainage network in this manner would be
more beneficial to the overall postmining topography and thus
the reason for not pushing all the box cut spoil material into
the pit.
• As stated earlier, the box cut spoil will be graded to blend
into the existing topography. Stability of the spoil will not
be a problem due to the compaction of the material by the
grading equipment and gentle slopes. Once graded, the soil
will be topsoiled and revegetated.
The 4!adge West pit was begun adjacent to a no coal area in the
southeast portion of the Wadge coal field approximately between
map coordinates E17,000, 529,000 and E19,000, 530,000. After
the initial box cut was opened in 1982, the spoil was rough
graded and mining progressed west to its current location as
shown on Exhibit 12-1.
The box cut for the Wadge East pit began in 1985, also along
the same no coal area as did the Wadge West pit, but not
entirely adjacent to the west pit box cut. The remainder of
. the spoil appeared to have been spoiled into a local Swale
through that area. Mining has since progressed to the east to
its present location.
12-54 Revised 10/1/86
