' H.2.1 Large and Medium Mammals
' The large mammals on the site include both herbivores
h h
d
d
D
d
lk
b
b
an
er
ivores, are common on
pre
ators.
eer an
e
,
ot
the steep foothills and mountain slopes east of the project
' area, and may use the upper pit areas within the site as winter
or seasonal range when snow is deep in the higher country.
' Mountain lion prey on the deer and may occasionally hunt
through the project site, but are more common in the higher,
' more remote mountain areas. Other medium sized animals on the
site include the coyote, badger, and bobcat as occasional
visitors, and the red fox, porcupine and beaver as residents.
'
H.2.2 Small Mammals

The most common small mammals observed in the sagebrush
' flats and riparian zone were the cottontail and jackrabbit.
The red squirrel, chipmunk, and ground squirrel were observed
in the pine and Douglas fir forests. Other common species
' include the raccoon, observed mostly along the Rito Seco in
the riparian zone, and the common skunk and pocket gopher
observed in most habitats. There are several common species
of mice and voles present in all the habitats on the project
' area.
' H.2.3 Birds
A fairly large and diverse bird fauna is p resent in the
' project area. The habitat types provide a variety of
opportunities for birds and many species inhabit the
' transitional zone between two habitat types. The bird species
observed are listed in Table H.2-1. The list is based on
' walking transects. I t is estimated th at the spe~ :ies actually
observed constitute approximately one third of the potential
' species that may use the site over the period o~ a year. The
only raptor observed was the red-tailed hawk, but the project
' H-5
