-7-
•
fairly flat and slopes gently down to the east. An air quality
monitoring station is presently located west of the site.
GDOIAGIC SETTING
The underlying bedrock at the pond sites consists of the
Tertiary CoaLront Formation. The rock types wnsist of interbedded
claystone and siltstone. The present Dual mining operation is
extracting coal frrm the Sudduth seam, located at the base of the
formation. Structurally, the area is highly folded., The pond sites
are to be situated alomg a synclinal fold referred to as the Johnny
Moore Syncline. Bedding attitudes dip ~roderately to steeply (25° to
80°) down to the synclinal trough.
• Zhe overlying unwnsolidated surficial deposits consist of
alluvial and oollwial soils. Quaternary age terrace deposits
consisting of sand, gravel and cobbles were observed on the upland
surfaces away from the drainages. These deposits were not encountered
during our investigation. Slopes between the terrace deposit and
major drainages are generally cclluvium covered, consisting of clays
and some lenses of clayey sand and gravel. Alluvium, consisting
primarily of sandy clay, was foul associated adjacent to the major
drainages. The engineering d~aracteristics of these deposits are
discussed in more detail in the Subsoils sectic~ of this report.
Zhe pond sites are located within Seismic Zone I, indicating a
low earthquake probability.
•
