Drawer 249
Vail, Colorado 81658
Mr. Hoover:
In response to your request for information regarding the proposed
gravel mining on the Carol Ann Schmidt property I have the
following catnments:
1.) Depth of topsoil on the soil is 0-5 feet in varying places and
could be even more. I have enclosed a recent copy of our
published soil survey which can help you in the completion of
your permit application.
2,) Existing vegetation on the site:
Brome grass Cheatgrass
Hluebunch Wheatgrass Crested Wheatgrass
Big Sagebrush Western Wheatgrass
Snakeweed Rabbitbrush
June grass Basin wildrye
Indian Rice grass
Slender Wheatgrass
Canada thistle
Musk thistle
Various weeds
Needle and thread
3.) Percentage of ground cover on the site on an overall basis is
approximately 26 percent.
4,) All topsoil should be retained for future use in the reclamation
process. The area should have a minimum of 6 inches of topsoil
applied to all disturbed areas to be reseeded.
5.) I would recommend planting the following mixture when completed
with land disturbance:
Hluebunch wheatgrass: 5 lbs. pls/Acre
Ephraim Crested Wheatgrass: 4 lbs. pls/Acre
Barton western Wheatgrass: 5 lbs. pls/Acre
These are drilled rates. If you are going to broadcast the seed into
the disturbed areas double the rates. The seed should be seeded to a
depth of 1/4 to 3/4 inch. Seeding should occur either in late spring
after the last frost or in the fall after the first freeze. Either
way, plan on having adequate moisture to establish the new seeding.
If possible, the disturbed areas should be mulched with such material
.
