Taxonomic Class: Fine, montmorillonitic Argic Cryoborolls.
A 0-3" -- Grayish brown (lOYR 5/2) silty clay loam, dark brown (lOYR 3/3)
dry; moderate medium granules; friable, slightly sticky, plastic; many fine,
common medium, and few coarse roots; medium acid, pH 6.0; abrupt smooth
boundary.
Btl 3-9" -- Very dark grayish brown (lOYR 3/2, moist) clay; strong medium
prismatic structure; firm, slightly sticky, very plastic; very thick clay
films on ped faces; common fine and few medium roots; neutral, pH 6.6; clear
smooth boundary.
B52 9-15" -- Brown (lOYR 4/3, moist) clay; strong medium prismatic structure;
firm, slightly sticky, very plastic; thick clay films on ped faces; organic
stains on ped faces; common fine and few medium roots; slightly effervescent;
mildly alkaline, pH 7.5; clear smooth boundary.
BC 15-19" -- Brawn (lOYR 5/3, moist) clay; moderate fine subangular blocky
structure; firm, slightly sticky, plastic; common fine and few medium roots;

C1 25-39" -- Light olive brown 2.5Y 5/3, moist) loam; massive; firm, slightly

C2 39-52" -- Mottled light gray (lOYR 7/1), strong brown (1.5YR 4/6) and

pH 8.5; gradual smooth boundary.
C3 52-60" -- Light gray (lOYR 7/1, moist) silt loam; common medium distinct
strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) and olive brown (2.5Y 4/3) mottles; massive; friable,
slightly sticky, plastic; SAR 9.6; few coarse roots; strongly effervescent;
strongly alkaline, pH 8.5.
Sampling Location (Typical Pedon): Twentymile Coal Company's Foidel Creek
permit area, Sample site #7. NE 1/4, SW 1/4, SE 1/4, Section 11, T5N, R86W,
Routt County, Colorado.
Ran a in Characteristics: Thickness of the mollic epipedon ranges from 8 to
6 inches. Clay content in the control section averages 35 to 60 percent
clay.
Drainage and Permeability: Moderately well drained; slow permeability.
