RGNOHILL SER1E6
This series consists of moderately deep and deep, mod-
erately foie textured Brown sails. These soils developed
in material weathered from fuse sandy shale and shalt'
sandstone of the Laramie, the Fox Hills, and the upper
Pierre formations, modified in many ]daces by deposits
of loess or of loamy material carried by water.
These soils occur on uplands in areas where the slope
range is 3 to 15 percent. The surface layer is thin, and
the composite texture of this horizon and the subsurface
layer is clay loam or loam. In areas where the soils are
clayey, the nati+re vegetations includes western +vheat-
c •ass, blue grama, galleta, and sacaton. in areas where
Lhe soils are loamy, the native vegetation consists of blue
grama or a mixture of short grasses.
The Renohil] soils are deeper (.ban the Midwa}• soils,
and they hate a B2t. horizon, which Lhe 1,lidway soils
lack. They have a thimler solum than the Ulm soils, and
they contain less sand than those soils.
STONEtlATt SERIES
This series consists of moderately deep, well-drained,
moderately sandy Brown soils of the High Plains. These
soils developed m sandy and gravelly, calcareous out-
wash. Most of the ouL+cash is from the Ogallala forma-
tion, i+'hich is of Tertiary aye, but some of the out+vash
appears to be of Pleistocene age.
The Stoneham soils in this survey area are moderately
developed. The color is generally fighter than that oi'
the modal soils of the series, the structure of the B2
horizon is less well defined, and the depth to lime is less.
The color of the surface layer is lighter than very dark
brown (lOYIL 2/2). The feature of the B horizon be-
comes sandier and the structure weaker as the climate
becomes drier toward the southern part of the survey
area. Lime is abundant in the lower part of the B
horizon and the upper part of the C horizon. The slope
gauge is 1 to 1S percent. The native vegetation is grass.
The Stoneham soils are sandier and lighter colored
than the P1aUter soils, and they have a less well developed
subsoil. They are less sandy than the Ascalon soils and
are lighter colored irr the surface layer. Their Bet hm•i-
zon coutaiis ]none silt. and gravel than that of the Ascalon
soils.
