As I told you Elmbled has
discussed this with Jim Morris of my staff end Bob Elderkin,
Renewable Resource Program Manager, U.S. BLM in Glenwood Springs.
Jim and Bob have considerable experience in these matters and ere
interested in trying some newly released certified seed on this
site which ie why Elmbled consulted with them concerning this
matter. Depending on when reclamation actually starts we would try
to supply some if not all the seed. This would have to be
negotiated at the time reclamation starts. Bob is particularly
interested because he is anxious to observe the performance of some
of the newly released varieties of native shrubs and the pit is
located within his area of responsibility.
First we would recommend you drop serviceberry and mountain
mahogany from the seed recipe. There have been considerable
problems with both species for rehabilitation of disturbed sites.
What we do recommend planting is "Hobble Creek Sagebrush", A__t_
_veaeyene and "Meybell Bitterbrush", Purehie___tridentata. No
grasses, forbs, or legumes should be planted within plantings of
the above although these types could be planted AFTER establishment
of the shrubs. Seeding rates should be 15-20 pia/square foot if
drilled end double if broadcast. This ie a little on the high
side and could be reduced if that rate is shown to cause a
hardship. I have not had time to estimate the cost.
If soil erosion becomes a major issue for whatever reason then the
Bite could be planted in alternating strips of grass/forb mix in
one strip end shrubs in the next strip end sa forth. Standard
rates ere well known for grasses end forbs.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES. Davitl H. Catches, Executive Director • WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Timothy W.
