RECLAMATION PLAN
• plan 4 '
The Maior Goals of the Coaldale Reclamation Plan
1. To return mined land to acceptable Eormer land use of wildlife habitat
including a self-sustaining vegetation mode at least equal to present
vegetation cover.
2. Control of possible soil erosion and air pollution from blrnaing dust.
3. Improvement of esthetics of the mine land as viewed from US Highway 50.
There are no plans for water impoundment or diversion of natural water
courses. Vegetative Base Line Studies in 1973 resulted in undisturbed sites barr
gound up to 70'/,. Pinon growth, the only obvious vegetation in gypsum bed
I
areas, show densities estimated as little as twenty trees per acre, (SCS) i
In cases where topsoil will be handled, soil will be "mined" from its natural
• site just prior to application on the mine spoils at higher elevations(no
more than 300' elevation difference).
Preferred seedlings species to be purchased from CSU are:
Pinon (Pinus edulis), Available May through June
Rocky Mtn. Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum), Available hiay through June
One seed Juniper (Juniperus monosperma) Available per request one year in
advance
Seedling plantings will be scheduled from mid-May through Iate June, in order to
I
take advantage of summer rains July through fugust. Seedling density wi~l
vary from 200 to 350 per acre. Planting, watering, mulching, and maintenance
techniques approved and practices by CSFS and private firms will be
employed for highest survival rates.
