RECLAMATION PLAN
Plan 2
Topsoiling
No suitable topsoil or plant media is found above the mineral to be
mined at Coaldale. Small amounts of suitable plant media are found in
the actual mining zone in Coaldale. However, the lower elevations of the
mine contain adequate soil material that can be transported to the mined
areas, is, conditions warrant the application of additional plant media
for successful revegetation attempts.
Cost studies and reclamation results will be utilized to ascertain the
u
effectiveness of mining topsoil from the lower reaches of the mine land
for use on the higher elevations. Costs for reseeding and maintenance of
topsoil mined areas must then be included in the total reclamation costs.
Handling and storage of topsoil at the mine site will follow guidelines per
116 (1) (g) and 116 (1) (j), Rules and Regulations. Where woody vegetation
has been or will be removed, all efforts are made to utilize the resourse
for firewood.
Applications of plant media will be geared to locations where the mine
spoil is unsuitable for seedling survival and self regeneration. Growth
media will be applied with bulldozer blading at a depth of from 15 to 35cm.
In most areas of the mine, spoils materials are capable of sustaining seedling
survival and self-regeneration, enhanced by applications of manure, organic
materials, and mulches, in order to improve site parameters of nutrient levels,
moisture retension, and organic matter.
