Task 1 entailed the determination of suitable
habitat at the drill sites for cacti species of concern. Task 2 entailed a detailed species survey if
suitable habitat was identified. All field work was completed on August 28, 2001.
RESULTS
Site ]4-06
This site occurs along the existing access road, adjacent to Che high pressure hose at
approximately 7,950 feet above mean sea level. The location is Township 13 south, Range 40
west, Section 26 (1VW1/4, NWl/4, SWl/4).
The area is characterized by an overstory of dense Gambel's oak (Quercus gam6elii),
chokecherry (Prunes virginiana), and serviceberry (AmelarJChier alnifolial. The underslory
consists of snowbetry (Symphosicarpos occidentalis), wild rose (Rosa woodsiJ), bracken
(Pteridiurn aquilinum), Arnica, native grasses and forts (see photo 1). Approximately 100 feet
downslope of this site is a small aspen move.
Several USt:S sensitive species may occasionally use this type of habitat, and may be present at
the site. These species inclndc: dwarf shrew, fox sparrow, and Lewis' woodpecker. None of
these species were observed at or near the sift. No cavity nests were found in [tic aspen trees but
one northern flicker was observed near the drill site.
Site 15-05
This site occurs at the southwest base of West Flatiron Mcsa at an approximate elevation of
8,500 feet above mean sea level. The location is Township 13 south, Range 90 west, Section 26
(NWl/4, SW]/4, SWl/4).
The habitat is a dense mountain shrub community consisting primazily of Gambcl's oak,
chokecherry, and serviceberry. The undcrstory is dense and consists of snowberry, native
grasses and forts (see photo 2).
Several USFS sensitive species may occasionally use this type of habitat, and may be present at
the site. These species include: dwazf shrew, fox sparrow, and Lewis' woodpecker. None of
these species were observed at or aeaz the site.
Site 15-05 will be accessed by an existing ATV/4 wheel drive trail that starts between two ponds
at the existing access road and goes through a lazge aspen stand (see photo 3). Many of the
aspen tacos at this site have nesting cavities, and there were many active birds in the grog. There
is at least one northern flicker cavity nest in one of the aspens. One northem leopan~ flog was
found at the edge of a pond. Sensitive species that may occur here include: boreal toad, tiger
salamander, northern leopazd frog, milk snake, pygmy shrew, and Lewis' woodpecker.
11J1ri, I J-03.15-tl6,1 J-07, I J-08.11-0I.dar
