SPRING AND SEEP SURVEY
A~detailed spring and seep survey was performed for the
Raton Creek Mine Project by Fisher, Harden and Fisher. The purpose
was to evaluate the quantity and quality of water occuring at
the land surface, and to determine the source formation. From
this information the impact of the proposed mine on this water
can be projected.
In general, any natural surface discharge of water large
enough to flow in a small rivulet can be called a spring. Dis-
charge smaller than this is termed surface seepage. This in-
dicates slow movement of ground water to the ground surface.
Surface expressions of shallow ground water or seeps may be the
presence of phreatophytes, aquatic plants, moist depressions and
marshy environments.
A study area of one mile in radius from the permit boundary
~~ was established. The exception to this was on the western side
where the study extended only to Raton Creek. A localized change
in the direction of ground water flow is thought to occur at the
stream channel. Ground water in the Trinidad Formation to the
west of Raton Creek flows to the east. The direction of flow is
to the west on the east side of the creek. It is thought that
Raton Creek receives ground water flow from both the west and the
east, as discussed by Arthur L. Geldon in the Regional Ground
Water. Hydrology of this report.
