• DESCRIPTION OF THE LAND TO BE AFFECTED
The Fish Creek exploration area is located in the Twentymile Park, about eight
miles Northwest of the town of Oak Creek, and about ten miles Southwest of Steamboat
Springs, in Routt County. Topography of the land is shown on the Surface and Coal
Ownership Maps in the Appendix. These maps are at a scale of 1:24,000 (I inch =
2,000 feet), with a 40-foot contour interval.
The land uses in the exploration area are livestock grazing (sheep, cattle, and
horses), hayland, small grain farming, and wildlife habitat.
GEOLOGY AND HYDROLOGY
A stratigraphic section representative of the Fish Creek exploration area is shown
in Figure 1. Four water bearing zones are encountered. In ascending order, these are:
(I) an approximately 30-foot thick sandstone and shale zone immediately below the
• Wadge Coal seam, (2) the Wadge coal seam, (3) an approximately 65-foot thick section
of shale immediately above the Wadge coal seam, and (4) a section of the Twentymile
Sandstone about 210feet thick, near the surface. In addition, holes located along Fish
Creek will penetrate the alluvial aquifer at the surface.
Of the above, only the Twentymile Sandstone yields sufficient volume of water to
be considered an aquifer. The Twentymile Sandstone is hydraulically isolated from the
Wadge zones by a 500-foot thick layer of marine shale. A second aquifer, the Trout
Creek Sandstone, is 300 feet below the Wadge coal.
The piezometric level in Twentymile Park is at about 6,700 feet through the
center of the exploration area. Artesian flow may therefore be expected at some of
the proposed drill sites.
Three creeks (Fish Creek, Middle Creek and Foidel Creek) drain surface waters
from the proposed exploration area. All three creeks eventually flow into Trout Creek,
which is a tributary of the Yampa River basin. Middle Creek and Foidel Creek are both
intermittent through the proposed exploration area.
PR-31-4 -4-
6/10/83
