MIND LAND WILDLIFE STATEMBNT/EVALUATIQtJ (Revised) N~~ ~ ~ ~9g6
far limited impact and select regular mine applications,
Division or wunera~s tx Geology
The following information pertaining to wildlife is provided for use by Mined Land Reclamation
Board in their consideration of a mining permit for:
ou Mine - Elbert County - TSS, R62W, Section 11 - Denver Brick
and Location of Mine (Legal)
Wildlife Species list:
Typical shortgrass prairie species: pronghorn antelope, coyotes, jackrabbits, golden eagles,
hawks, mice, ground nesting songbirds, deer, etc. No prairie dogs are present on the site.
l7xjangered/critical species/impacted:
No threatened or endangered wildlife species are likely to inhabit this vicinity. However,
the Swift Fox is a species of Special Concern which occurs in eastern Colorado shortgrass
prairie habitats. They could be present in this vicinity.
Critical habitats/vegetative commmities impacted:
The habitat in the mine area is high quality prairie habitat dominated by blue grama,
little bluestem, and yucca. This habitat will be lost during the period of mining, but
may be replaced following mining if revegetation efforts are successful.
Assessment of impact:
The value of the habitat excavated away will be lost during the mining period and to
a minor extent mining activity will disturb some species of wildlife in the surrounding
area. In the long run, if reclamation and revegetation are successfully accomplished,
impacts should be reasonable.
Mine Reclamation recon®endations (include key species habitats for which restoration is
designed).
It is very important to revegetate the mined site with similar vegetation to the surroun-
ding area, prairie dominated by blue grama and little bluestem. Yucca need not be planted
as it should come in naturally. Very aggressive revegetation efforts may be necessary to
succeed in restoring the site to current conditions.
Prepared By: David Weber ~~~ j,!/'~ ~~: November L9, 1996
Submitted ey: David Weber ~6ti ~!w "~ Date: November 19 1996
This statement is void if not processed within 1 year.
This analysis does not constitute approval of application.
