A specialized blasting technique commonly called blast casting will be
• utilized in conjunction with dragline operations to reduce the dragline
bench height and minimize dragline material handling requirements. With
blast casting, the overburden shot is designed to cast the material across
the pit, thereby lowering the elevation of the dragline bench. This
practice is currently in use at Colorado Yampa Coal Company and has proven
to be both safe and cost effective.
The dragline will then be positioned on the spoil side of the cut and
essentially build its own bench as it progresses through each cut.
Once the overburden has been removed, the top of the coal seam will be
cleaned with a rubber tired dozer, then drilled and blasted.
The blasted coal will be loaded into end-dump haul trucks with either a
front-end loader or a hydraulic shovel, and transported to the tipple.
For details of blasting procedures see page 780-44-1.

Backfilling and regrading, topsoiling, revegetation, and soil stabilization
practices are detailed in appropriate sections (see pages 780-111-1,
780-107-1, 780-117-1 and 780-129-1, respectively).
Equipment
A list of the major equipment which is typically utilized for the mining and
reclamation activities is presented below:
OVERBURDEN REMOVAL
E UIPMENT
Dragline
•
TR 90-29
TYPE
Marion 8050
Permit Renewal 780-1-3(a)
Revised 03/09/90
