SOIL STABILIZATION PLAN
• Colorado Yampa Coal Company's soil stabilization plan has been modified to
incorporate the rill and gully plan and clarify changes of the soil
stabilization plan. These modifications are a result of the mid-term review
and technical revisions. As presented, the plan is divided into four
sections: Soil Stabilization Plan; Plan to Reclaim Excessive Rilling and
Gullying; Permanent Drainageway Construction; Permanent Drainageway
t4aintenance Plan. All of the above are explained in further detail within
Exhibit 2S, Rill and Gully Plan, of the C-81-071 permit.
Part 1: Soil Stabilization Plan
The major components of the soil stabilization plan include chisel plowing,
seeding, and contour furrowing or ripping. Mulch will not be applied as
approved by the 16 May 1585 minor revision. The exception to the
application of mulch involves topsoil treated with the 1ladge rotoclear.
Such material already contains a natural mulch.
• The soil stabiiization practices will be completed in the same field season
if topsoil is redistributed in the summer or fall. In the event of winter
topsoaling, when all activities can not be accomplished prior to major
snowfall or freeze up cf topsoil, CYCC will implement contour furrowing or
rippi after op i application. Any remaining activities will be
completed as soon as practical during the first normal planting seascn (as
required by OSF1 special stipulation).
Tfie guidelines for construction of contour furrows are as follows:
The frequency and depth of contour furrows and the frequency of check
bridges in individual furrows is determined primarily by:
1. Magnitude of runoff from design precipitation event.
2. Topographic slope.
3. Drainage area above area to be ccntour furrowed.
The principle of contour furrowing is to increase depression storage to the
• extent that the runoff from the design may be completely contained.
Permit Renewal 780-129-1 Revised 10/29/87
