• This portion of the Recommended Alignment is called a Modified III-C,
or South Alternative, because with the exception of the first mile at the
western extreme of the route, it will follow Alternative III-C fairly
closely.
Modified Alternative III-C differs from the original Alternative III-C
because: the Do Nothing Alternative will be used in Somerset and will not
require any residences within the town to be relocated; the route will be
modified to require 3 bridges (at Miles 19.7, 20.1 and 21.8) rather than
6; and the cost will be lower.
To the east of Section III is a portion of the highway which extends
from Mile 21.9 to Mile 24.4 (Mile 25.3 on the existing highway) or the end
of the project. This alignment was the same for all the alternatives as
• well as the recommended one which means that the present highway will be
used with whatever improvements are required to update this section of high-
way to the modern and safe two-lane design standards.
The advantages and disadvantages of this alignment are divided into two
sections; Do Nothing through Somerset, and the new alignment beyond Somerset.
The major advantages for the Somerset Do Nothing are:
The "Do Nothing" option through the town of Somerset will not
interfere with any residences or businesses and will result
in no relocations of families or businesses within the town.
This option is the overwhelming choice of the residents of
Somerset.
The construction and right-of-way cost for this 0.6 mile will
be nil.
•
