Section 785.19 (c) Continued.

Cenozoic History of the Michigan River Basin, North Park, Colorado,
1957, by D. F. Eschman (Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists
Guidebook to the Geology of North and Middle Parks Basin, Colorado;
and the Final Environmental Assessment for Coal Lease Application
C-22177, 1980, by the Bureau of Land Management (EA No. CO-010-0-50).
The information compiled from these references was field checked
and supplemented in the mine plan and tipple areas in May 1980, by
Kerr Coal personnel.
Unconsolidated stream-laid deposits were field mapped using the
geomorphic criteria of slope breaks, where the essentially flat-
lying stream laid deposits meet the sloping valley walls. Alluvial
terraces were included within the mapped units. Upland areas
covered by glacial terrace deposits mapped by Kinney (Kinney,
n
U
1970), and the veneer of colluvial material covering the hill-
slopea, were not mapped on the basis that they are not unconsoli-
dated stream-laid deposits as per the definition of "upland areas"
in 30 CFR 701.5. The unconsolidated stream-laid deposits holding
streams were found in low-lying areas drained by the Illinois River
near the Kerr tipple; and the Canadian River, Bolton Draw, Bush
Draw, Williams Draw and Sudduth Draw near the mine plan area.
Unconsolidated stream-laid deposits in the Illinois River flood-
plain were found in the vicinity of the Kerr tipple. These de-
posits exist within the floodplain of the Illinois River defined by
slope breaks on either side of the floodplain. Terraces and me-
ander deposits west of the tipple were mapped as well as the marsh-
land deposits east of the tipple. Stream-laid deposits were mapped
both within and outside the 100-year floodplain where found at the
surface. The distribution of unconsolidated stream-laid deposits
near the Kerr tipple is shown on Map 17, Kerr Tipple Area Hydrology.
I
785-7
