i
EXHIBIT J —Vegetation Information
I. Narrative Description
(a) Description of present vegetation types:
The current types of vegetation established across the proposed area of operations consist of
low brush, cactus, and mixed grass types. Vegetation height ranges from low ground cover
short grasses to low shrubs less than 18 inches in height. Types of vegetation and
approximate percentages are as follows:
• 20% prickly pear and barrel cactus
• 30% rabbitbrush
• 10% winterfat
• 5% wormwood
• 5% fringe sage
• 30 % mixed grasses including blue drama, wire orass, squirrel tail, and western
wheatgrass
(b) Relationship of present types of vegetation to soil types.
The present vegetation is homogeneous across the site and not dependent on whether the soils
are of the Garita-Platoro complex or the Graypoint gravelly sandy loam. Test pits indicate
that topsoil is relatively uniform in composition and thickness across the proposed area of
operations. A%erage topsoil depths range from 10 to 12 inches in depth.
The normal potential natural vegetation on the Garita soils is dominated by winterfat, Indian
ricegrass, blue grama, and fourwing saltbush. The normal potential natural vegetation on the
Platoro soils is dominated by blue grama, Indian ricegrass, need leandthread, winterfat, and
fourwing saltbush. If the range deteriorates, the proportion of these more desirable plants
decreases, and that of plants such as threeawn, prickly pear, snakeweed, pingue. And other
(orbs increases.
The normal potential natural vegetation on the Graypoint soil type is dominated by blue
grama, Indian ricegrass, western wheatgrass, need leandthread, winterfat, and fourwing
saltbush. If the range deteriorates, the proportion of Indian ricegrass, need leandthread, and
western wheatgrass decreases and that of blue grama, threeawn, snakeweed, and rabbitbrush
increases.
(c) Carrying capacity for range lands on or in the vicinity of the affected land.
• The carrying capacity of the Garita soil type for its normal characteristic vegetation in
Ibs/ac are as follows: I) Favorable year—800 Ibs/ac,2) Normal year— 600 Ibs/ac, 3)
Unfavorable year—400 Ibs/ac.
