level. Almost all of this alluvial water is from the River itself due to its proximity and permeability
through the gravel. North of the permit area, the gravel does not contain significant water. Irrigation
season does add some that stays on top of the Mancos Shale on its path to the River. The gradient of
groundwater in the alluvial gravel of the general area is to the southwest toward the River.
The shale immediately below the gravel deposit prevents any rechazge from the gravel into deep
aquifers that might be located below the shales. No water wells are located on the Mudge or Rigg
properties or within any reasonable distance to the permit area. No wells downstream or upstream
can be can be affected by the proposed gravel mining. All water to the residences and the golf course
is provided by the City of Fruita. The water quality within the alluvial gravels is expected to be more
or less the same as that of the River, which is water of pH 8.0, TDS of 400-750 ppm and very ]ow
sediment since the gravel will filter it out.
5. Soils
The Mesa County SCS soils report has mapped the area for the 19 Road Pit. It shows that the area
for this 110 permit consists entirely of one soil type, which is Fruitland Sandy Clay Loam Rc (0 to
2% slopes). The approximate soil boundaries are shown on Map Exhibit B-1.
