Mr. Jim Kiger -2- January 2, 1905
due to the fact that shrub cover is provided by undisturbed adjacent habitat.
The variance also reflects the fact that shrub establishment is extreme]y
difficult on these areas due to several factors including:
1) The necessity of establishing a quick herbaceous cover to provide
erosion control on the slopes. The herbaceous cover proviaes
severe competition for woody plants.
2) The adjacency to undisturbed habitat results in significant browse
damage to seedling shrubs by deer and elk.
3) Slope gradients physically prohibit mature shrub transplant
operations.
The Division requests that Colowyo submit a technical revision addressing the
alternative seedmix to be employed in shrub establishment areas.
Please contact us if you have any questions.
Sincerely, ~ ---_____
Gan Mathews
Reclamation Specialist
DM/fw
Doc. No. 6448
• 4.15-16
