CO 81101 <br />Gustavo Gomez <br />ASSISTED BY District Conservationist DATE 8-11-86 <br />^ INDIVIDUAL ^ GROUP ^ UNIT OF GOVERNMENT <br />SITUATION: <br />Southway Construction Company is in the process of establishing a gravel mining operation <br />just north of Costilla, New Mexico approximately `i mile north of the Colorado-New Mexico <br />State line along Highway 159 and '•S mile west adjacent to Costilla Creek. The operation <br />will initially be under ten acres in size and less than 70,000 tons of sand and gravel <br />will be extracted per year. According to Mr. Ungefug the operation maybe expanded to <br />20 acres in the future. Mr. Ungefug requested that we inventory the soils and vegetation <br />within the proposed site. He also asked for Mine Reclamation Recommendations. <br />SUGGESTED SOLUTION(S) <br />SOILS: The soils within the proposed mining site are know as Aquents and Usthorthents. <br />They are basically gravelly loams or gravelly sand loam soils. Small areas fo Shawa loam <br />may also be mined. Refer to the attached soil map and descriptions for a detailed analysi <br />of soil properties. <br />VEGETATION: Vegetation, within the site consist mainly of the following species: <br />Blue grams, Sleepy grass, Big sagebrush, Greens rabbitbrush, Skunkbush, Squirreltail, <br />Kochia weed and Inidian ricegrass. The valley bench range site is in fair range conditior <br />and ground cover is approximately 25 percent. The are adjacent to the proposed mining <br />site is mainly abandoned cropland also known as Go Backland", with a Kochia weed <br />ground cover. - <br />Mine Reclamation Recommendations: <br />1. Prior to mining. surface soil should be stripped and stock piled in sufficient <br />quantity to provide a 6 to 12 inch cap cover the sloped flanks and other area <br />needing top soiling. <br />2. Stock piled soil should be seeded to Western wfieatgrass at a rate of 16 pounds <br />per acre pure live seed. ~ <br />1r CFeck approO rlor~ corpery <br /> <br />
