1
~ ~ HG--Shanty loam, warm, 0 to 3 percent slopes. This deep, well
' drained soil is on strearm terraces and flood plains of alluvial valley
floors. It formed in alluvium. The native vegetation is mainly grasses.
' Elevation is 5,000 to 5,300 feet. The average annual precipitation is it to
14 inches, the average annual air temperature is 50 to 53 degrees F, and the
' average frost-free period is 140 to 165 days.
' Typically, the surface layer is grayish brown loam about 27 inches
thick. The substratum to a depth of 60 inches or more is stratified sandy
clay loam, loam, and silty clay loam. The soil is mildly alkaline to a
depth of 48 inches and moderately alkaline belay that depth.
Included in this unit is about 10 percent poorly drained fine sandy loam
' soil adjacent to stream channels. Also included is about 5 percent
well-drained soils that average sandy loam in the upper 40 inches.
' Permeability of this Shanty soil is moderate. Available water capacity
is high. Effective rooting depth is 6U inches or more. [hmoff is slow, and
' the hazard of water erosion is slight. This unit is generally subject to
rare, very brief periods of flooding from April to September. However, some
parts of the town of Florence included in this unit are not subject to
1 flooding because of higher elevation or flood protection measures. The
ground water rises to a depth of about 20 to 30 inches in a few areas of
' Shanty soil for a brief period in early summer.
1~bsC areas of this unit are used for irrigated cropland. A few areas
are used for urban land. Hay and pasture are the main irrigated crops. A
few areas on the west side of the town of Florence are used for growing
vegetables and corn for silage.
1
