1 <br />' SOILS {NFORMATION EXHIBIT I <br />Cj-C~scajo very gravelly sandy loam, 10 to 40 pe~roent slopes. This <br />deep, excessively drained soil is on edges of old, high terraces deeply <br />' dissected by drainageways. It formed in gravelly alluvium. The native <br />vegetation is mainly grasses. Elevation is 5,000 to 5,400 feet. The <br />average annual precipitation is 11 to 13 inches, the average annual air <br />tertperature is 50 to 53 degrees F, and the average fast-free period is 150 <br />to 170 days. <br />1 Typically, the surface layer is very dark grayish brown very gravelly <br />sandy loam about 6 inches thick. the upper 15 inches of the substratum is <br />extremely cobbly sandy loam. The lower part to a depth of 60 or more inches <br />is extremely oobbly sand. The soil has a high mntent of secondary calcium <br />carbonate between depths of 6 to 21 inches. The soil is moderately <br />alkaline. <br />Included in this unit is about 10 percent Midway stony clay loam and 5 <br />t percent Shingle very stony fine sandy loam on steep side slopes. t4idvay <br />soils are clayey and shallow to shale, and Shingle soils are loamy and <br />shallow to sandstone. Also included is about 5 percent deep Kim loam in <br />drainageways. <br />' Permeability of this Cascajo soil is moderately rapid to rapid. <br />Available water capacity is low. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or <br />more. ld~noff is rapid to very rapid, and the hazard of water erosion is <br />high to very high. <br />'ibis unit is used for rangeland. <br />The potential plant camunity on this unit is mainly sidecats grams, <br />' blue grams, little bluestem, Indian ricegrass, and needleandthread. 'ihe <br />average annual production of air-dry vegetation is about 750 pounds per <br />acre. If the condition of the range deteriorates, blue grams, red threeawn, <br />ring mutely, and pricklypear increase. <br />1 <br /> <br />
