An aerial photograph furnis ed by the
USDA in 1972 (Exhibit B-1) shows the old mining operation. The
applicant has never operated the mine as a private bus' ess.
The mine is located on a iow bluff outcropping surroun don
three sides by irrigated farmland. ~At one time the mi ing area
was separated from the cropland by the old route of the Fort Lyon
Canal as may be seen on Exhibit C-1 ( the USGS Map ). owever,
about 15- 20 years ago the canal route was changed to he north
as indicated on Exhibit C-l.
The designated area includes large areas of disturbance composed
of spoil piles, shallow holes, open spaces, pockets of hrubs
and trees, and two major stockpiles of material. One s ockpile
of topsoil is estimated to contain nearly 1600 cuyds. o material
and the other stockpile of crushed gravel prepared by B nt County
contains an estimated 5800 cuyds. The latter is stored on the
0.25+ acres attached to the east boundary of the design ted area.
It is estimated that 60% of the designated area shows e idence
of surface disturbance in one form or another.
