eh ESPEY, HUSTON & ASSOCIATES, INC.
Z.3 BACKFII.LING
The mine cut will be backfilled and the bench regraded to cross sections
shown on Exhibit M-1. Pre-existing spoil piles located on the site will be used in the
backfilling and regrading process to return the area to contours and slopes specified
below.
A total of ~$#a5 of material comprising the mine bench azea
will be pushed upslope with bulldozers to achieve the cross sections shown on Exhibit
M-1. The slopes (as shown on Exhibit M-1) will generally be 2.5:1 (horizontal:
vertical) but locally may range as high as 2:1. By comparison, natural slopes in the
azea (exclusive of cuts related to previous mining) range up to Z:1 and steeper in the
immediate vicinity. Proposed cross sections were made at 100-foot intervals.
Earthwork to achieve final contours will involve several steps. In no case will a
slope exceed the steepness of the natural slopes in the azea (2h:lv), so stability of
the fill azeas is assured. Spoil in fill azeas will be placed in 6-inch horizontal lifts
• and compacted to 95% modified Proctor before the next fill is complete. A dozer
will be used to accomplish this task. When the layers become too nazrow to grade
along the contour, the dozer will move up and down the hill to blend the lifts. Fill
material from the excavated azeas will be stockpiled and moved by a loader to azeas
requiring fill. A registered engineer will supervise eazth moving work to ensure
compliance with the regulations set forth in 30 CFR 817.101. Regraded slopes will
be checked with a clinometer to verify slopes shown in Exhibit M-1.
Final grading will be along the contour unless this jeopardizes the safety
of the equipment and its operator. Plans for work along such contours will have to
be approved by MSHA. Grading, preparation and placement will be conducted in a
manner which minimizes erosion and provides a surface for replacement of topsoil
to minimize slippage.
• M-4
