Stoneham Series
The Stoneham series consists of well-drained, Ileal•ly
level to ntodcrntely sloping soils on uplands. These soils
formed in loamy, old alhrvinl material.
In a representative profile (fig. 11), tha surface layer
is light grayish-brown loam about 5 inches thick. It is
noncalcnreous. The subsoil is brown sandy clay loom
about 8 inches thick. It is noncalcnreous. The underlying
nlnterial is light-gray, sandy loom ntld gravelly loom
that is hig}lly cnlcnreous. At a depth of 30 inches, it is
pale-brown gravelly sandy loom tllnt is highly cal-
careous. It extends to n depth of about GO iltclles.
Stoneham soils absorb water at n moderate rata and
the available water capacity is nlodernte. Perlncabilit.y
is moderate, and the entire soil is suitable for roots.
is in scattered areas along major stream channels in the
count}'- It is a71 uplands back from the stream channels.
The areas arc irregular in shape and range from 30 to 50
acres ill size. Tltis soil has n profile similar to the one
described as representative for the series, but it has a
thicker surface layer and subsoil. Runoff is medium
to slo+v. lVatcr erosion and soil blowing ere moderate
hazards. Included in mapping ore a few small areas of
Platncr loam that commonly are in small depressional
wrens.
llfost areas of this soil are cultivated, but n felt'
Wrens remain in native grass. Capability unit IVe-3,
Stopeham loam, 3 to 9 percent slopes (SrDI.-This soil
has the profile described as representative for the series.
It is on uplands near major stream channels in scattered
areas throughout the county. The Wrens are uniform in
shape and range from 50 to BO acres in size. Runoff is
generally medium but is rapid if rile soil is unprotected.
The hazards of water erosion and soil blowing me severe
in cultivated wrens. Gullies form in drninnge~rnys in same
places. Included in innllping arc small nrcas of send
