Stoneham Series
The Stoneham series consists of well-drained, Ileal•ly
level to ntodcrntely sloping soils on uplands. These soils
formed in loamy, old alhrvinl material.
In a representative profile (fig. 11), tha surface layer
is light grayish-brown loam about 5 inches thick. It is
noncalcnreous. The subsoil is brown sandy clay loom
about 8 inches thick. It is noncalcnreous. At a depth of 30 inches, it is
pale-brown gravelly sandy loom tllnt is highly cal-
careous. It extends to n depth of about GO iltclles.
Stoneham soils absorb water at n moderate rata and
the available water capacity is nlodernte. Perlncabilit.y
is moderate, and the entire soil is suitable for roots.
Representative profile of Stoneham tonal, 3 to 0 pel•-
cent slopes, in an area of grass, 170 feet south and 20
feet cast of the northwest cor»cr of section 21, T. 3 S.,
R. 59 N.:
Alm to 5 inches, Ilght 6rnplsh-brown (SOTR G/2) loom, deck
grnylsh Urov'n (lOYR 4/2)-when moist; weak, med-
ium, granular structure; soft, friable; moot' abrous
roou,; noncalcnreous; neutral; Glen r, smooth boun-
d¢ry.
B?t-5 to 13 Inches, browu (lOYR 5/3) sandy clay loom, do rl:
brown (lOYR 4/3) when molsC; moderate, medium,
prlsme[Ic structure parting to wrnk to moderate
subn ngnlnr blocky structure; thin cloy alms on ~prd
faces; hn rd, friable; noncn lcarrous; mildly niknllue;
grndunl, smooth houndn rr.
Clcn-13 to ?0 incbrs, Ilghbgray (IOTR 7/2) sandy lou w,
pale hrown (lOYR 0/3) whrn mots[; wrnk, mnllun,,
subongalar blocky 5[ruc[ure; hn rA, friable; cnlcnrr-
ous and contnlns Ilme In splotches and disseminntrd;
moderately nll:nllne: clear, smooth boundary.
IIC2cn-.0 to 30 Inches, Ilghbgray (lOTR 7/2) gravelly
loom, pale brown (lOYR 6/S) when moisC; messlve:
hn rd, [rlahlo: 15 percent grnvcl; calcareous find
contn lna common, medium and con rse, Ilme mottlrs
(301R 8/2) and dlssclnlnnted Ilme; moderately nikn-
Ilne: clear, smooth boundary.
ISC3-30 to 601nches, pale-brown (]07R 0/3) gravelly sandy
loom, brown (lOTR 5/3) when moist; mnsslre:
e11g1,tIS hard, very rrlnble; 18 Percent grnvcl; cnl-
cnrenus and contnlns disseminated lime; modern [rly
alkaline; clear, wovy houndn r}•.

The A horizon renees from 3 to 7 Inches 1n thickness, fmm
grnylsh brown to pole bron•n in color, and from hrevy floe
sandy loom to loom In texhvr.
