's'ue""•
~1 United States
Department of Soil
Conservation
Agriculture Service
May 14, 1985
Mr. Harold Lewis, Administrator
Chaffee County
P. O. Box 699
Salida, CO 81201
Dear Harold:

230 West 16th Street
Salida, CO 81201
539-7331
Last week I met with Laura Cummins, Chaffee County Road Clerk, to review
the mine reclamation permitting process on several Chaffee County Mine
Reclamation Projects. At that time we reviewed the information that I
had provided to the County on the "Salida Pit". In that information I
had suggested two basic alternatives in reclaiming the mine site.
One of these alternatives suggested utilizing sewage sludge from the
Salida Idaste Treatment Plant. This would have added much needed organic
matter since the present top soil conditions are a very course textured
infertile material. Since submitting my report to you last year I have
learned through the Colorado State Health Department that this site does
not lend itself well to sewage sludge application and that environmental
hazards may occur.
Specifically, two things concern me. The health department guidelines
indicate that sludge should not be incorporated into the soil on slopes
exceeding 8q. Special conservation measures would be needed to incorporate
sludge on slopes exceeding 8%. Secondly, the guidelines indicate that
application of sludge is not recommended on land comprised of loamy sand
or courser material.
I would suggest that the combination of these two
application of sludge on this site marginal. If
could further investigate this site more closely.
Sincerely,
23-0$ S-
Bob Schroeder
District Conservationist
restrictions makes
you desire, my office
O The Soil Conservation Service
U is en agency o11he SCS-AS-1
D eparlment of Agr~c ulture tU-~
