PART 2 -WASTE ROCK PILE
WASTE ROCK PILE:
It is our understanding that the proposed waste rock pile may be located below the
sewage treatment plant level and/or the crushing and screening level. The
proposed waste rock pile design must consider drainage aspects imposed by the
existing surface facilities. We concur with the recommendations outlined in the
Geo-Hydro report which suggest that the pile be placed on the flat ridge between
drainage swales. Tf the pile must be constructed over the drainage Swale,
additional precautions must be taken. The Swale which drains directly to Pond 3
must either be controlled (e.g. piped) or flow must be prohibited from reaching the
Swale. In lieu of diverting upstream flows, a large drain could be provided under
the pile. This drain would need to be carefully designed so as to prevent any
possibility of saturating the waste rock pile.
We recommend that the 48 inch diameter half round culvert be shifted to the east
to divert flows around the waste rock pile. We also recommend that the pipe from
the sewage treatment plant be diverted to Node N and returned to the Swale
below the waste rock pile.
Surface runoff from upstream sources must also be controlled. Toward this end,
we recommend that a ditch be constructed immediately upstream of the pile on
the sewage treatment plant level to divert flow toward Node N. The ditch from
Node N to the drainage Swale flowing to Pond 3 must be modified slightly to
insure that it does not pass through the waste rock pile.
The surface of the waste rock pile should be maintained at a slope of more than 5
percent to minimize the potential for infiltration of surface runoff. Snow removal
should be undertaken periodically to insure that moisture is not permitted to enter
the pile.
u
