' • PART 4 -FOUNDATION ANALYSES
CRUSHING AND SCREENING LEVEL:
Colorado Westmoreland, Inc. has expressed a desire to determine the affects of
any instabilities of the crushing and screening fill on the foundations of structures
on this fill. Merrick & Company has investigated these foundations and reviewed
Geo-Hydro's "Report, Phase 2 Geotechnical Studies, Orchard Valley Coal Mine,
Paonie, Colorado, Colorado Westmoreland, Inc." and has reached the following
conclusions:
Based on logs which were made at the time of the installation of the
caissons and piles comprising the foundations for the buildings on this level,
it appears that the foundations for the Crushing and Screening Building and
Transfer Tower No. 2 are keyed into the bedrock layer underlying this fill.
This conclusion is made by projecting the foundation lots onto Section BB' of
the Geo-Hydro report. This information is shown on the enclosed drawing
entitled "Crushing and Screening Foundations".
2. Geo-Hydro indicated that for a fully drained slope, the critical failure plane
is a shallow, near surface failure. if this is the case, the foundations on this
level would be far removed from any slope movements and as such, the
depths and locations of these foundations are adequate.
• 3. Should careful monitoring and observation o[ this fill indicate a potential
deep failure of this fill, additional procedures would be required to protect
these structures. The fill would have to be stabilized if possible and the
foundations would probably need to be tied back into competent bedrock
with a system of rock anchors.
•
