Memo to Erica Crosby 2 Mazch 12, 2005
Lupton Pit Mining Setbacks Permit No. M-2004-078
Based on the DMG analyses, the applicant must commit to a minimum setback of 70 feet from all
pennanent valuable manmade structures not under their ownership. Where setbacks greater than 70 feet are
required for reasons other than stability, such as the 110 foot setbacks specified from gas wells, of course
those greater setbacks would supercede. The Applicant can provide additional information to the DMG to
gain approval of setbacks less than 70 feet in areas where the pit will be appreciable shallower than 50 feet
in depth. If such a submittal is provided, it must delineate the proposed setbacks in detail on a map that
contains contour lines showing the depth to bedrock based on the borings that have been driven. The
sufficiency of the number of borings to develop such a map will be reviewed by DMG if a submittal is
forthcoming. Also, the Applicant could conduct additional geotechnical testing to determine the actual
shear strength properties of the soil strata; the Applicant should consult with DMG prior to undertaking
such a sampling and testing program, to be certain that the program will meet with DMG approval.
attachment(s)
cc: Carl Mount, DMG (via email and w/o attachments)
c:\Documents and Settings~acs\My Documrnts\lup[on pit stability.doc
