INTRODUCTION -----------------------------------------------------------------------
On August 18, 1994, the Apex Nu. 2 (C-81-O11) mine site was visited and
•
sampled with the intention of monitoring vegetative change over several years. The
mine site is located approximately four miles northwest of Oak Creek, Colorado
alongside Trout Creek in Ruutt County. The disturbed areas lie between 7380 and
7425 ft elevation and are separated into two sections. The portion northwest of Ruutt
County Ruad No. 29, the Hillside reclaimed area, is a small southeast-facing strip that
formerly included the mine office, the mine fan, the mine portals, and the portal access
road. Southeast of County Road 29 is the larger Valley Bottom reclaimed area which
used to include the stockpile area, the tipple, the loadout bins, the bathhouse, the shop,
the electric substation, and the sediment pond. Vegetation monitoring was not required
in 1994, but was undertaken at the request of the operator. Sampling involved laying
out and examining 1/4 meter plots whose southeast corner was permanently marked,
allowing them to be sampled again in successive years. The main purpose of sampling
will he to determine whether (and how) reclaimed vegetation is changing in its
composition and diversity from year to year. The site was reclaimed in 1993 and has
nut been previously sampled. Six plots were placed within the ?'!'?'? acre Hillside area
while IS were placed in the ?'?'?'? acre Valley Bottom
Environmental Services, ]nc. carried out the sampling.

reV ~ l/a/ 9 ~
1
~ gy- 3a
Matthew Hayes of Hayes
DEC 2 1 1998
