•[n the fall of 1993, approximately 6 Ibs of "yard area mix" was applied to the yard area in
bare spots. This was also done in 1995 as well as Bone minor aeration of soil. Due to very
dry conditions experienced at the site from 1992-1996, and after many discussions with the
landowner, SCS and the DMG, it was agreed that more drought tolerant species was needed
in the bench area to provide better vegetation. The resulting mix was developed from all of
this information and discussion. The amounts shown below were applied were done over
the yard area of approximately 2.5 acres in the fall of 1996. As described below, the mix
was only applied to bare spots and should not be taken as a reseeding effort that triggers a
move of the [en year bond clock from 1992 to a later time frame.
Canada Wildrye 0.5 lb
Newhy Wheatgrass 2 lb
Smooth Brome 2 lb
Cicer Milkvetch 1 ]b
Intermediate wheatgrass 0.5 lb
Sanfoin 0.5 lb
.Crested Wheat 1.5 lb
Birdsfoot Trefoil 0.4 Ib
Kentucky Bluegrass 0.4 16
The Cicer milkevtch, birdsfoot trefoil and sanfoin were recommended by [he SCS and other
vegetation experts as good legumes for dry western slope conditions that will also help to
fix nitrogen in the soil, thus helping the other grasses. The newhy wheatgrass is a new
hybrid that was recommended by the SCS in Steamboat Springs as a new species that has
seen good success in dry poor soil areas. The Canada wildrye is also a similar grass to the
newhy. The kentucky blue and intermediate wheat have been added for diversity and past
success in western slope revege[ation.
Approximately 40 16 of fertilizer (mostly nitrogen with some phosphorus) was applied in
the 2.5 acre yard area. Approximately 10 cubic yards of manure was also mixed with the
existing soil in poorer areas. Aeration ripping in the top 4 l0 5" with a small D-4 dozer was
also done after seed placement in small areas. Existing vegetation was preserved and the
work only affected a small percentage of the entire yard surface area (less than 6% ). No
work was done on the upper bench area other than one small spot of less than 25 feet x 20
feet.
No work of any kind has been done since 1996.
• P 184.01
Mid-Term Review 3121/01
