Colorado, USGS 7.5 minute series quadrangle
Cattle Creek, Colorado, USGS 7.5 minute series quadrangle
Date of Investigation: November 12, 1979
Personnel: OD Hand and Richard Enders, field investigators; Michael D. Metcalf
and ~lstian J. Zier, principal investigators. -
File Search: According to a files search conducted by the Colorado State
rc a1~ e~ oTist's Office, there are no known archaeological resources in the
study area. However, previously documented historical resources in the general
area include the route for the Colorado Midland Railroad, which served Glenwood
Springs and Aspen. The old railroad bed was not encountered during the survey.
Location/Desc~rip_t~ion: The loadout facility is planned to be located approximately
• ~i es no'T- rt w~o~' the city of Carbondale, just southwest of Colorado State
Highway 1182 in Sections 20 and 29, T7S, R88W, Garfield County, Colorado. The
facility will be constructed in a 25 acre area and will consist of a train track
approximately 1 mile in length, a conveyor belt and silo 0.50 miles long and
a truck dumping area.
Environment: The area is within the confines of the Roaring Fork River drainage.
The r- er creates a flood-plain ranging from 0.50 to 0.75 miles in width and
is bound to the northeast by a mountainous area rising 800' above the flood-plain.
The southwest is bound by a mesa-like area 160' above the plain.
The specific project is, for the most part, located on the flood-plain northeast
of the river; the track and silo are located here. From the silo, the conveyor
belt runs southwest across the river to the truck dumping area located on the
edge of a mesa ridge to the southwest.
The area is drained by the Roaring Fork River which exhibits a wide flood-plain
with numerous intermittent sub-drainages feeding the river. Ground cover ranges
from 50-100% and visibility from poor to fair. Vegetation is generally grasses,
pinon, juniper, service berry, willow, cottonwood, prickly pear cactus and rose.
The soil is light brown silt of moderate compaction. Clay content and modeling
ability is medial. Those areas nearest the southwest mesa-like ridge and the
river exhibit numerous quartzite gravels and larger stones. Deposits are
• undetermined but extend, in places, over a meter.
Field Methods: Coverage of the project area was somewhat irregular, having to
be restr~c d to those areas void of ground coverage, vegetation or snow. Areas
along the. flood plain in association to the track were determined to be too
