4-10
4.1.4 Cultural and Historic Resources
• Cultural and historic recources information is presented in
Appendix Is. The approved Munger Canyon Mine Permit (C-020-81)
also contains detailed survey information that will contin-
ually be upgraded as the on-going program progresses.
4.2 GROUNDWATER HYDROLOGY
4.2.1 Regional Hydrogeology
The Book Cliffs coal field lies north of the Grand Valley in
the rugged terrain formed mostly by sandstone outcrops of the
Mesa Verde Group. The region is drained by a series of streams
flowing approximately in a north-south direction. East Salt
Creek is the principal drainage in the area of interest. Allu-
vial sediments deposited by East Salt Creek and its tributaries
reach a considerable depth along the main stream.
The bedrock strata of the Mount Garfield formation consist of
sandstones, siltstones, claystones and several coal seams.
• Strata at the project area strike north-northwesterly and dip
one to three degrees (Erdman, 1934).
Groundwater occurs in the Book Cliffs coal field in some allu-
vial sediments of the primary streams and in the more permeable
sandstones and coal seams in the bedrock.
4.2.2 Site Specific Hydrogeology
The hydrogeologic data of the site (Figure 4.2-1S) have been
obtained from observations during the exploration program,
geological logs of boreholes and test pits, water level read-
ings in monitoring wells and field permeability testing.
saw 2z ,Qe~
