Evaluation •
Based on the fact that artifacts are being exposed in disturbed ground and buried
cultural deposits are likely present, the site is field evaluated as need data or potentially
eligible for listing on the NRHP. Testing is required for a final determination of eligibility.
Site SDT1284 is an historic corral and cowboy camp located in an open saddle ofa
mountain ridge at an elevation of 7920 feet. The site measures approximately 400ft (N-S) by
200ft (E-~. It is situated within an open meadow surrounded by oakbrush. The corral is
located in the southwest quadrant ofthe site and measures SOft by 45ft.. A loading chute is
within the corral on its east side. A barbed wire fence runs northeast of the corral for 260+
feet along the northwest side of the meadow. A camp azea is established in the southeast
quadrant. Poles, tent stakes, a wood pile, and a modern hearth were features observed there,
and probably represent use within the past ten years by ranch workers or hunting guides. A
trash pile in the northeast corner of the meadow indicates use of the site from much earlier
times, as it contains rusted metal and purple glass. Much of the glass and other materials
here have been burned.
Evaluation
The site does not meet criteria that make it eligible for nomination to the NRHP.
Accordingly, it is field evaluated as not eligible and no further work is necessary. •
Site SDTI285 is an open campsite located on a bench just below the top of a
mountain ridge spine at an elevation of 7900 feet. The bench is created by a shelf of
sandstone that outcrops on the site. This shelf overlooks a drainage to the east, which
contains aspen and is likely to run surface water at various times of the yeaz. The sandstone
also creates apour-off on the southeast quadrant of the site. The site boundary is configured
as a "dog-leg" to the southwest, and roughly measures 80m (N-S) by 25m (E-Vl~. Flake
artifacts including a cluster of 15+ siltstone flakes and a biface fragment of tan chert, another
biface fragment ofblack/grey chert, and 10 scattered flakes of siltstone and chert were
recorded on the north end of the site. Three manos were found on two sides of an oakbrush
clump neaz site center. Two small flakes were found on the southwest corner of the site,
upslope from the sandstone bench and within an old roadcut which leads from the ridge
saddle down to the bench. Deep soils aze present throughout the site and artifacts are
exposed in shallow areas neaz bedrock exposures. Accordingly, the site is likely to contain
buried cultural deposits.
Evaluation
Based on the fact that artifacts are being exposed in disturbed ground and buried
cultural deposits are likely present, the site is field evaluated as need data or potentially
eligible for listing on the NRHP. Testing is required for a final determination of eligibility.
i
7
