2. The pond embankments range in height from 6 to 10 feet. We
performed stability analysis for several conditions on a representative
model of a 10-foot high embankment. Factors of safety in excess of
1.3 were found for the conditions modeled. The lowest calculated
value was 1.7. Due to the relatively low height of permanent water
storage, seepage and piping below the embankment are not
considered to be significant concerns.
3. Construction recommendations including suitable and unsuitable
materials types, and placement and compaction recommendations are
presented in the report. The embankment for Pond 013 is located in
a moderately sloping area. We recommend benching of the ground
surface prior to fill placement for this embankment location.
Embankment fill should be moisture conditioned to within 2 percent of
optimum moisture content and compacted at least 95 percent of
standard Proctor maximum dry density (ASTM D 696). Fill placement
and compaction should be observed and tested by a qualified
geotechnical engineering firm.
4. Monitoring and inspection should be performed by qualified individuals
as required by State regulations.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The general location of the proposed sedimentation ponds is shown on Fig.
•
1. More details for each proposed pond locations/configuration are shown on Figs.
2 through 7. We anticipate the ponds will be generally constructed by excavation
from the upper elevations of the pond area, with this material being used to construct
embankments along the lower side of the pond. The height of the embankments
ranges from 6 to 10 feet. All of the embankments have a crest width of 14 feet. The
side slopes of the embankments are planned at 2.5:1 (horizontal:vertical). Table A
shows general dimensions for the six embankments under consideration.
LORENCITO COAL COMPANY, LLC
SMALL SEDIMENTATION EMBANKMENTS
CTLlT 26,559
2
