Surface Water
The permit area is drained mainly by Coal Gulch, which is an ephemeral
stream. This stream has carved a valley in the area which in part has
exposed the "A" Coal Seam and the "C" Coal Seam which have been mined
previously in this area.
Coal Gulch drains into Lightner Creek approximately one mile from the
permit area. Lightner Creek is a perennial drainage. Lightner Creek
flows into the Animas River which is located approximately four miles
east of the permit area.
The closest U.S.G.S. stream gaging station is located on the Animas
River. The results of flow gaging on the Animas River are set forth in
Exhibit 12, Water Flow Information.
During July of 1984, two grab samples of water were taken in the
vicinity of the permit area. One sample was taken in Cherry Gulch
directly across State Highway 160 from the planned surface facility area
of Peerless Resources. Another grab sample was made slightly upstream
from the confluence of Coal Gulch and Lightner Creek. These samples
were analyzed for the list of parameters required by the Division, and
the results of the analyses are set forth in Exhibit 11, Water Quality
Analyses.
•
The pond located in the last strip cut of the previous surface mining
activities contains water. The results of a water sample taken from
this pond is also set forth in Exhibit 11, Water Quality Analyses. This
pond should be eliminated as part of the clean-up operations of
Arness-McGriffin Coal Company.
The regional and site-specific hydrological features of the permit area
encompassed by this permit are set forth on the Regional Hydrology Map
(Map 6) and the Geology/Hydrology Map (Map 7).
2.04-18
