SURVIVAL MONITORING PROGRAM & IMPLEMENTATION
Project Manager: Tim Meikle
Methods. BNG Consultants will design a monitoring program to sample approximately 2 to 5%
of shrub plot acreage in order to estimate woody plant survival. Survival of woody species will
be estimated using permanent belt transects located on newly reclaimed shrub planting areas. A11
data collected will be analyzed to provide density estimates of live plants on a per species and per
site basis. Data will be collected at four times during a unit's history: 1) Year of planting; 2)
First year subsequent to planting; 3) Second year subsequent to planting; and 4) Fifth year
subsequent to planting to determine the need for replanting of the site. All data and analysis will
be compiled into a written report and submitted to Seneca II Mine on an annual basis.
Estimated Start Date
Monitoring
Monitoring Progam Intiated
Intial Report
Final Report
September 1995
August-- Annually
October 1995
December 1995
December 2000
HERBIVORY CONTROL STUDY
Project Manager: Steve Kloetzel
Methods. BNG Consultants will develop a randomized block experiment to test the effectiveness
of a physical herbivory barrier (Tree Pro Protectors), two chemical deterrents which act as
standards in the industry (Tree Guard and Deer- Away), and a control. The study will be
implemented by planting crews during normal planting operations on the site. Since chemical
deterrents are only active for one year, data will be collected one year after application.
Evaluations will be made and a ftnal report written and submitted with recommendations
concerning herbivory control.
Estimated start date
Data Collection
Estimated date of completion
September 1995
August 1996
November 1996
13-10-3
Revised 12-21-95
-~- a~
