TOPSOIL DEPTH & SHRUB ESTABLISHMENT STUDY
Project Manager: Dave Ianson, PhD.
Methods. BNG Consultants•will determine the effectiveness of establishing woody shrubs on
different topsoil depths. Seneca II Mine will identify and prepare a study site with a minimum
of two different application rates of topsoil. BNG Consultants will develop and implement a
randomized and replicated system of permanent belt tr~ttsects on the site. The monitoring
system will be designed to provide unbiased results for statistical analysis. Variables to be
measured include: 1) Survival; 2) Vigor; and 3) Rooting Depths. The study site will be
monitored in August on a yeazly basis for a three yeaz period. A status report will follow each
monitoring period with preliminary results and recormendations. At the termination of the
study, data will be statistically analyzed and a final report submitted identifying the probable
response of woody shrub establishment to reduced topsoil application. Best technology practices
identified from the study will be incorporated into the reclamation plan.
Estimated Start Date
Annual Monitoring
Estimated Date of Completion
September 1995
August 1996,'97,'98
October 1998 ,~
MICROBIAL POPULATION STUDY
Project Manager:. Dave Ianson, PhD.
Methods. Microbial sampling will be conducted on three separate types of sites: 1) Direct
hauled topsoil sites; 2) Stock-piled topsoil sites; and 3) Reclaimed lands greater than 5 yeazs in
age. The study will focus on. determining the rates of shrub inoculation on these sites. BNG
staff mycorrhizast will define indicator microorganisms and sample for those appropriate species
on the separate soil types. Plant materials will be destructively sampled as needed and soil
samples will be taken. At BNG Laboratories, organisms will be isolated and identified. A report
on the relative degree of colonization between sites and amongst plant species will be submitted
to Seneca II Mine along, with appropriate recommendations for future soil moving and
inoculation activities.
Estimated Start Date
Estimated Date of Completion
September 1995
December 1995 ~
13-10-2 Revised 10-6-95
