• 5.0 - GEOTECHNICAL AND PILE STABILITY
Geotechnical investigations and testing were conducted,
between 1976 and 1982, by various engineering firms for the
areas within and adj-scent to the refuse disposal facilities.
A detailed discussion of subsurface materials and their pro-
perties are presented in the October 1984 application sub-
mitted by West Elk Coal Company. Several gradation and
strength test results performed on refuse materials by Ana-
conda Minerals Company have also been reported in that appli-
cation.
A detailed and extensive slope stability analysis using the
• above test results was performed and the results have also
been presented in the application submitted in October 1984.
5.1 Additional Testing on Refuse Materials
Two samples of refuse (preparation plant waste) were obtained
in February 1985. Gradation analysis, compaction and con-
solidated undrained triaxial tests with pore pressure
measurements were performed on these samples and the results
are shown in Appendix B. The following effective strength
parameters were obtained for the samples tested:
•
18
