DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
David H. Getches, Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DI\
DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
Richard D. Lamm
Governor
March 22, 19114
Mr. Jim Hendricks
Pueblo Coal, Inc.
25825 East Highway 160
Durango, Colorado 81301
Oear Mr. Hendricks:
As per your request, I am specifying the Division's revised requirements for
the Carbon Junction Mine surface and ground water monitoring program.
I have reviewed the baseline data submitted to CMLRD by the Carbon Junction
mine since November, 1982. Samples were submitted prior to November, 1982,
but I did not include these results to my review because 1t is my
understanding that the samples were taken shortly after the wells were
completed, and do not indicate the true nature and character of the ground
water.
• Based on my review, the Division requires the following water program to be
implemented starting April, 1984. Furthermore, .tn order to facilitate
sampling and data reporting, the Division strongly suggests that Carbon
Junction develop a consistent format for both sample identification and the
reporting of data. I have Incorporated some suggestions into the following
list of required parameters.
I. 5 rp ings

A. Sample Identification: 1) CJ-UP-Spg #1
2) CJ-LO-Spg. #4 (or possibly change
to #2)
3) REA-Spg. #3
Note: These sample numbers would conform to previous sample location maps
submitted to the Division
B.~ Field Information:
1) Date sample taken
2) Flowrate
a) if dry - state no flow
b) if flowing - state amount and whether this was measured*
or estimated
n
I`J
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
