DESCRIPTION OF CASTLE SAN[) PIT
PERMIT #M-77-213
The permit boundary of this site is identified on the large map by the
labels PB 77-213. The description to follow presents a brief history of the
permit and then describes the features more or less from a north to south
direction.
BRIEF HISTORY: This operation began long before there oss a requirement for a
permit. Most of the site was fully disturbed by the time a permit was
required. Therefore soil resources stripped before permitting were largely
lost. The pile labeled "Topsoil Stockpile" is all the soil that was salvaged
after permit issuance in 1980. In the 1985 amendment the permit boundary of
the original permit was extended southward to include the sand dike that has
now been largely removed. This alteration in this permit was done at the
suggestion of the Colorado Division of Mined Land Reclamation during an
inspection in 1982.
PRIMARY USE: The primary function of this site now is as a disposal azea for
washings from the Transit Mix operation immediately adjacent to the south.
This waste disposal is part of an overall reclamation plan for both operations
which will eventually produce a very gently sloping area extending from the
back of this operation southward to Bradley Road. This plan was suggested by
the MLRD and approved by the MLRB in 1985.
SECONDARY USE: Completion of the removal of the sand originally contained in
the dike separating this operation from the operation to the south. The two
areas yet to be mined are located in the southwest and southeast corners of
the permit and aze labeled "UNMINED SAND."
NORTH ACCESS ROAD: This is the original access road into this operation and
is still used to some extent. Most of the access to this operation though is
now from the south through the area where the dike used to be. The north
access road would probably need to be ripped prior to reclamation. However,
due to continued development in adjacent lands its removal might not actually
be necessazy, if adjacent landowners would desire the road to remain for their
use.
MINOR DISTURBANCE: Two thin strips along the north and south sides of the
Fountain Mutual Irrigation Ditch have been final graded and are under
revegetation. Actually, much of this is under the control of the ditch
company and whatever is done here mist be done with the concurrence of the
ditch company. Nevertheless, it is still in the permit area and therefore
needs to be included in some way. Slopes in this area are about 2:1 to 2.5:1
and cortgosed mostly of a sandy surface material.
SUPPORT BERM/BAC!(FILL: Located about halfway up the north slope of the pit is
a fill area that is approximately at the final elevation of the depth of fill
to be placed in the pit at the end of reclamation. At present this fill
serves the purpose of providing additional support for the concrete lined
irrigation ditch. If reclaimed at this time the south slope of this fill
would need to be reduced in steepness so that a 3:1 slope to the bottom of the
pit is produced. No material is available in the pit to accomplish this as
the plan calls for a final slope constructed out of sediment basin disposal,
as suggested by MLRD in 1982 and approved by MLRB in 1985.
Page 2 Bonding Information M-73-007/M-77-213 January 7, 1992
