• also been placed in two new stockpile locations (KK and EE) over the
last two years. All topsoil stockpile additions since October, 1983
were determined by utilizing representative cross sections. The current
topsoil volume for each stockpile is presented in Table 9-4-1.
Existing Disturbance Area
Topsoil has been salvaged ahead of mining at Seneca II Mine using
techniques described in SMP No. C-005-80, Volume IV, Tab 9, Attachment
9-1, Section 2. Since 1984, the majority of this topsoil has been
directly hauled to final graded reclamation areas. The short term
excess of salvaged topsoil was stockpiled at locations Z, EE, HH and KK.
All existing disturbance areas shown on Exhibit 9-3, Topsoil Balance
Plan were determined from 1" = 400' monthly reclamation progress maps, a
1" = 400' May 1, 1986 vertical aerial photograph, and on-site field
checks. The total disturbance area which requires topsoil replacement
as of August 1986 is 710.9 acres (presented later in Table 9-4-4).
• Proposed Topsoil Salvage Area
All topsoil reserves will be salvaged at Seneca by the end of mining
year 1996 (Operations Plan, Exhibit 12-1). Proposed topsoil salvage
areas are outlined on the Topsoil Balance Plan, Exhibit 9-3.
The following technique was utilized to verify the topsail salvage
depths assigned to each soil map unit. First, the volume of topsoil
projected to be salvaged between the July 1984 topsoil balance and the
August 1986 topsoil balance was determined. The projected volume of
topsoil to be salvaged during this period was 301.5 acre feet (Table
9-4-2). Second, the topsoil replacement areas for the July 1984 through
August 1986 period were determined from 1" = 400' monthly reclamation
progress maps, a 1" = 400' May 1, 1986 vertical aerial photograph, and
on-site field checks. This July 1984 through August 1986 topsoiled area
• totalled 211.0 acres. Third, the topsoil replacement areas were field
checked and sampled on a 300 foot grid to determine the topsoil
replacement depths. Topsoil replacement depths for all 143 sample
locations are presented in Table 9-4-3. Topsoil replacement depth
9-29 Revised 10/01/86
