HYDROLOGY DESCRIPTION - RULE 2.04.7
•
The Bear Coal Company is currently working through the Colorado State
Engineer to obtain information on the presence of any domestic wells in
the area and adjacent to the proposed surface facility area. This
information, including depth to water and average yield, will be
submitted shortly to the Division. Three (3) domestic wells are located
in the area to be used 6y the surface facilities of the Bear No. 3
operation.
The Bear Coal Company plans to locate only surface facilities along the
North Fork of the Gunnison River. No subsurface disturbance, other than
foundation work for buildings and structures, will be necessary in this
area. The actual mining will take place above the valley floor;
therefore, the Bear Coal Company does not expect that there will be any
disturbance to the alluvial or groundwater conditions in the valley as a
result of mining or surface facility placement.
• The Bear Coal Company does realize the importance pf the North Fork of
the Gunnison River and the associated alluvial material. In order to
quantify the belief that no subsurface degradation of water quality will
occur in the alluvium as a result of the Bear No. 3 surface facilities,
installation of groundwater monitoring wells will be undertaken. On
February 13, 1982, the Sear Coal Company has installed three groundwater
monitoring wells:
I) Northeast corner of the permit area near the proposed
transformer location.
2) Southeast portion of the permit area near the office
complex.
3) Southwest portion of 'the surface facilities area due south
of the proposed sediment
pond location.
A fourth monitoring well, as proposed by the Division, will not be
• installed because of access limitations to the proposed site and
ownership jurisdictional problems. Bear Coal Company believes that the
-32-
